Lesson 1: Cultural Heritage: Main Concepts and Definitions
Whose Cultural Heritage?
Since the 19th century, the concept of national heritage has been one of the key factors in this process as the idea of nationalism rose throughout Europe. This led to the creation of national museums and societies of monument protection.
During this period only the works of art and monuments of great historical/religious value had beenconsidered worthy of protection.
In the second half of the 20th century, organizations such as the UNESCO – have been successful in preserving some particular aspects of cultural heritage, through incorporating new conceptssuch as World Heritage, (UNESCO, 1972) and Memory of the World.
